PARIS ANTIQUE SHOW AND SALE - March 7 & 8, 2015

Good friend of the SDHS, Jeff Stutley has asked us to share the news that his annual Paris Antique Show is set to go this year on March 7 & 8.

The Paris Antique Show & Sale is held at the Paris Fairgrounds, 139 Silver Street.

The show runs on Saturday, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.; and on Sunday, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Admission is $5.

Lots of free parking.

Lunch counter will be available with lunch items and coffee, tea and delicious desserts.

GREAT WAR LECTURE SERIES RESUMES AT LAURIER BRANTFORD

The series is sponsored by the Great War Centenary Association in partnership with Laurier Brantford. In total they will be presenting seven lectures that have been organized by Laurier Brantford history professor Peter Farrugia and alumnus Evan Habkirk and the Great War Centenary Association. WAR OF 1812 SOUTH DUMFRIES VETERANS TO BE HONOURED

On November 9, 2014, the County of Brant Heritage Committee, along with the members of the South Dumfries Historical Society, will be honouring War of 1812 Veterans interred in South Dumfries. 

This event is a continuation of ceremonies that took place over the summer of 2014, to unveil granite markers installed beside the resting place of each of the Veterans.  The Grave Side Markers were supplied free of charge through the federally-funded “War of 1812 Veteran Graveside Project”. 

On June 28, 2014, ceremonies took place at the Oakland Pioneer Cemetery, the Oakland Cemetery and the Scotland Cemetery.  Additional ceremonies were held on September 14, 2014 at the All Saints and Mt. Pleasant Pioneer Cemeteries.

There are six War of 1812 Veterans interred in three South Dumfries Cemeteries, each of whom will be honoured on November 9, 2014, beginning at 2:00 p.m. at the Clump Cemetery. The additional unveilings will follow at the 2 remaining cemeteries immediately after. Further details will be announced prior to the event date.  The St. George Legion will honour the Veterans with a colour guard, and, a member of the Paris/Port Dover Pipe Band will play a bagpipe tribute. Refreshments will be provided after the unveilings at the South Dumfries Historical Museum, located at 36 Mains Street South, St. George, Ontario N0E 1N0.

The Dinner portion of the evening is sold out - we have only limited space in the downstairs hall to seat and serve people.
Upstairs, however, there is more room - and there will likely be room for you to join us for the CONCERT portion of the evening.
Singer ALIX KINGSTON will be performing songs from the First World War era - sad songs, patriotic songs, funny songs, a slightly racy song....
She will be accompanied by DONNA DUNN-ALBERT on keyboard.
You will learn some context of the songs - and be invited to sing along at times.

GREAT WAR COMMEMORATION DINNER AND CONCERT JULY 26

A dinner and cabaret-style concert commemorating the beginning of the Great War (1914-1918) will be presented by the South Dumfries Historical Society on Saturday, July 26th.

The event will be held at the St. George Memorial Hall at 34 Main St. S. in downtown St. George.

A buffet-style roast beef dinner will be served at 6 p.m.

Dinner will include a presentation by Expositor journalist Vincent Ball, who will read excerpts from his First World War-themed play entitled “Doing Our Bit.”

The cabaret-style concert featuring First World War-era music will follow at 7:30 p.m.

Singer Alix Kingston will perform songs from the era, provide historical context and lead some sing-alongs (lyrics provided).

Tickets for dinner and concert are $20 each, with seating limited to 50.

 

Tickets for the concert only are $10 each - and there is much more room upstairs.

·         THE ST.GEORGE and COMMUNITY MEMORIAL HALL

“This building was presented in memory of Salem Griswold Kitchen by his wife and was remodeled by the citizens as a Memorial to the Soldiers who fought the the Great War'

On the 20th day of August 1925 both the Memorial Plaque and the Hall where unveiled and dedicated by His Hon. Harry Cockshutt, Lieut-Governor of Ontario (1921-1927).

This makes the St.George and Community Memorial Hall the oldest Memorial to the soldiers of the Great War (WW1) in the Brant County and Brantford areas.

It was followed the next year (1926) by the St.George Memorial Park and Cenotaph then the Paris Cenotaph in 1929 and then the Brant War Memorial in 1933.

So it is rather fitting that the first event in our area of Remembrance to mark the start of the First World War is being held in the areas first memorial.
